My favorite of the spate of Jane Austen adaptations. Emma Thompson’s screenplay is delightfully witty and an excellent distillation of the novel, and all the actors have great fun bringing their characters to life. Kate's character is a little thinner than Thompson's, but she makes you feel that Marianne's romantic sensibility and zest for life is more than just youthful silliness and impracticality. It's part of her defense against the circumstances of a young, dowerless but upper-class woman in 1800, a mask over her real desperation. It makes her true joy at the inevitable happy ending that much more palpable and exhilerating. |
